    Mission Statement
The Lower Saxony State and University Library Goettingen (SUB), founded in 1734, is one of the largest libraries in Germany. It serves as the central library of the University of Goettingen and the Goettingen Academy of Science. The collection comprises over four million books. The libraries of the various university departments contain another three million items. The library subscribes to about 16,000 journals and serials. Moreover, the library's special collections contain more than 210,000 maps, 12,000 manuscripts, 350 literary bequests and 3,100 incunabula. With more than 160,000 interlibrary loans in 1999 the library plays a key role in the national literature exchange. Together with five other leading German libraries, the SUB Goettingen is part of the cooperative National Library system, responsible for German 18th century printing. The library employs 248.5 full-time staff equivalencies, and its budget for 1999 was about nine million marks.
