Mission Statement
The largest Czech library specialized in technical literature, collections appx. 1 million of books and bounded journals, subscribing 1.5 thousand of technical journals, 10 subscribed on-line information providers, appx. 1/4 mil. loans/year, appx. 40 thousands of registered users, 150 employes, 3/4 of active users are students of technical schools

Local network with Novell/UNIX/LINUX/Win NT, TCP/IP protocol, 200 PC with WinNT Workstation for local users, 25 of them in study rooms, OPAC and redirector UltraAccess for remote users, 10 Mb/s line to Internet provider CESNET.

Proprietary library automation system based on Dataflex, a new Czech commercial acquisition and cataloging system is being implemented now, fully UNIMARC/UNIMARC Authorities compliant

Automation system was enhanced by w@p interface for cell phone users last year, new OPAC databases with the owerview of Czech journals with ISSN assigned (STL is the Czech ISSN National Center), new OPAC database with Czech gray litarature and new design of www pages were published.
- Union Catalogue
State technical library submits its new catalogue entries to the Czech union catalogue CASLIN.
- Software used
Union catalogue of journals owned by 15 Czech technical libraries was launched this year as a base for automated ordering of EDD service and for "informed" collection development of participating libraries. More see bellow under 8. This cataloge and relevant accounting system for EDD is powered by Dataflex software.
- New features
The new shared cataloging process is under the construction together with Czech Technical Univerisity Library.
- Digital Library
- Based on your own production of digital documents
We digitize the documents on demand in order to provide remote document delivery and printouts.
- If so, what is new in your digitization programmes?
Based on Union catalogue of VPK, the orders for loans or digital copies are automatically distributed to remote libraries, which then make interlibrary loans or digitization of documents.
- Based on external sources
Access to the following information sources: EIFL Direct (EBSCO), Web of Science, Link (Springer), ProQuest5000, Periodical Citation Index, Science Direct(Elsevier), Minerva, Metadex, Computer Select Web, Wiley. Some of them, according to licences, are accessable for registered remote users via UltraAccess2000.

- Special web services
New w@p protocol enables to search in OPAC, to order, to reserve or to extend the loan
- Electronic document delivery services
The EDD component of our INVIK system was enhanced to VPK (Virtual Polytechnical Library), which enables remote users to printout the copy of demanded article chosen in the Union catalogue of 15 Czech technical libraries or to order inter library loan service. This service is usually completed within 48 hours. This process is based on copying exception in Authors law and the copy is allowed for personal use only. No corporate or comercial users are admitted.
- Research and technology development projects
The new project "Portal for Science, Technology and Medicine" was launched recently. This portal should summarize the overview of all accessible electronical information sources licenced from Czech state funds to one tertiary database and make it a starting point to access them. The technology of ExLibris Metalib/SFX and Z39.50 protocol will be used for the intended goal. Twelve Czech libraries are involved in this project and the project is scheduled for next three years.
- Other important projects
The State Technical library is involved is retrospecive conversion of its cards catologues, including the 24 thousands holdings of historical collections (from 18th and 19th century), 0.5 million cards in general catalogue of monographies and 30 thousands cards of periodicals.
These activities are very manual labor demanding and are scheduled within next three years.
