Institution Type: Research Library
Mission Statement
Traditional research library, founded in 1566 serving both to public and academic users (cca 12000 this year).
The third largest library in Czech republic having legal deposit for books and periodicals as well. Total 1.7 million of items, including large historical collection (over 80.000 of rare prints, manuscripts and incunabulas).
- Computer networks and Internet connectivity
Local network based on Novell and Unix. 2 servers, over 100 PCs, most of them are Pentium based, all with Internet optical connectivity of TEN-155.
20 PCs are available to borrowers.
- In general HW, SWAlpha 1200 (Unix) for www and library system, Novell server for file, mail and print services.
- Library automation
We use ALEPH 500, patch 11.5 (March 1999). It covers Cataloguing+Items, Circulation, Serials, OPAC. ILL and Acquisition are not fully integrated yet. Also we had digitised a certain number of manuscripts and rare prints.
We have developed special routines handling printouts of the system.
Now we are working on digitised card catalogue and we will make it accessible within ALEPH environment in this Autumn.
The next version of ALEPH 500, patch 14.2 (April 2001) should be implemented and launched within a few months. ILL module should go into production till the end of the year.
- How about future? We are thinking about:
- more effective use of Z39.50 for copy cataloguing
- integration of different resources and databases into one search and information gateway
- cooperating activities for authority files together with National Library of Czech Republic and Moravian Land Library
- making digitised rare prints and manuscripts accessible via Internet
