At present Aleph use the same way to manage reservation for loaned items and request for closed stack materials by the way of Flag in position 15 of tabaleph 15. Tabaleph: pos. 15: possible value Y/N. Y - when Request is placed in OPAC, checks the total number of holds already placed. If equal to the number of copies, the system will not allow placing additional holds. N the number of holds should be placed are unlimited. In this way our only possible choice is to define this flag to Y because when a request is placed and circulation staff is coming to pick up this item other users should submit new request to the same item with the only result to wait it unsuccessfully (we have a high volume of circulation activity, about 1,000 loan transactions by day). We suggest to use flag 15 for requests and to define new flag for reservations. Flag 15 refer to flag in pos. 29 (possible value Y, C,N, T) New flag nn refer to new flag xx as like as actual flag in pos. 29. In this way users will have two separate commands in OPAC or Web, one to request items and an other one to reserve items. Parameter Tables (tabaleph) TI Loan status for a few hours DESC Possibility of having a "hour loan period" that can be defined by the library. The variables, copy status of the item and borrower status should be set by the library. For example, a student with a certain borrower status (03 at our Library) can borrow a book with copy status (22) for 2 hours. A paid member (borrower status 06) may not borrow this book for 2 hours because it is used for course work. However a faculty member (borrower status 01) may borrow it for 4 hours (23). This way, it gives the Library greater flexibility. e.g. Special materials will be loaned only for two hours by time. Period of a lecture for special items is fixed in two hours independently from the day time: if an item with status xx is loaned at 9.13a.m. it must return at 11.13a.m. the same day if the same item is loaned at 13.00p.m. it must return at 15.00p.m. the same day. For example, we loan our students cameras, tapes etc., which they must return until three hours the same day, or books for the period of a lecture. I have been told by other libraries that they need this option too, and that they use clumsy, unfit substitutes such as defining a one-day status and then changing the returning hour twice a day.
