Aleph Configuration:

  • Version: 3.2_5.16
  • Operating System: VMS 6.22
  • Server type: Alpha 2100
  • Network configuration: some TCP/IP; some Pathworks connections and some serial connections to terminal servers.
  • Workstations: We work on DEC-VT320 terminals and with PC workstations with Windows 3.1 via Reflections 2 terminal emulation over our local area network. We use HP Laser IV or V printers and some DEC LA 75 printers.

Major Developments since last ICAU-meeting:

* We upgraded to two ALPHA computers. The upgrade was in two stages, first to ALEPH version 3.2.5_13 and then to ALEPH version 3.2.5_16.

*We installed a graphic user interface (GUI) for the ALEPH database. The software is downloadable from the Library web site.

* Due to the overall system crash much time was spent during May and June working on the restoration of the ALEPH system in the Library. There were numerous problems, including overwritten backups, corrupted data, which had to be dealt with.

Major Developments planned:

  • Linking scanned images to the bibliographic database.
  • Upgrade of operating system to either UNIX or NT
  • Installation of ALEPH web server.

Open Problems:

* With each version upgrade there were bugs to sort out and problems to be resolved. Most of them have been resolved but a short list still remains and each week the ALEPH staff promised to take care if it "this week."

* Interface from ALEPH to RLIN has now been delayed for 7-1/2 years.

* The title index is not stripped of subfield condes and therefore creates an extremely sloppy file.
