Aleph Configuration:

Version 3.26.1
Functions implemented and used: OPAC, Circulation, and WWW server
Operating system: Solaris 2.5
Server type ( model, RAM and disk space sizes) : Sun, Sparc 20 with 192 MB of RAM and 6 GB of disk space.

Network configuration:
The College network is a FDDI network, the library network is an Ethernet 10 base T with protocols IPX/SPX and TCP/IP. The library network is a part of the FDDI College network.

Type of workstations: Pentium, 486, 386 and VT100 terminals.

Major Developments planned:

Migration to Aleph 500 version with a DEC Alpha server as soon as possible.

Implementation of a hands-off material request procedure involving web pages. This procedure should send a message directly to the sub-library keeping a certain book petitioned by the library user in an OPAC.

Open Problems:

  1. System crashes down once in a while due to unknown causes. One of this is a suspected compatibility problem between Solaris operating system and MicroFocus compiler (The one which Aleph is compiled with).
  2. Import process problems. This happens mainly because cataloguing is done outside Aleph in other system. The routines have had problems to match the features of the two different systems.
  3. Frequent corruption problems with the CIR files. Lost links, "hidden" loans, they don´t show up in the users account but the system records a loan for that user.
  4. Insufficient features in cataloguing module. Like validation of fields on-line, no macros.
  5. Insufficient features in print formats for circulation
  6. The 3.26.1 version manual is poor, badly structured and is not very useful.
