Major Developments since last ICAU-meeting:

The WWW server has had our best attention. since we purchased it. Particularly we have modified the graphic planning (the screens lay-out, the buttons), we have changed the arrangement of some functions (for example the help screens have been organized in a different way than the default screens) and we have created a CGI (Common Gataway Interface) to make easier the use of external links. Besides, in order to obtain a consistent English version, we have used a pre-processor program producing the international pages in an automatic way.

At the moment, in our Library System, for the search in OPAC, the readers can use either Macintosh with Netscape or terminals. So the remote users have two access: http://www.bib.uniud.it and telnet://polaris.bib.uniud.it

An other important development, after switching to the UNIX version and since the last ICAU meeting has been the definition of an Italian network of ALEPH databases using UNIX : actually we access Genoa and IULM (Milan).

Major Developments planned:

While I am writing this report we are waiting the 3M hardware (with self-check client) and ALEPH SC server to set up an Automatic Circulation System. The 3M station will be located in one of the our University Libraries where the night opening is needed. Barcodes and magnetic strips in the items have been already included and the borrowers use a reader card with pre-printed barcodes.

An other project which we are working on, concerns the conversion of databases from UNIMARC format (like BNI, Italian National Bibliography) to ALEPH format in order to support the card catalogues conversion. New locals will be created in ALEPH, so that the librarians can access the bibliographic database and duplicate records from it.

Open Problems:

In spite of the attempts to submit some requests for improvement of a few Acquisition and Print IUTILS to the REQ database, the following problems are for us unsolved:

  1. Patrimonial check of the items (the inventory report is so inflexible and inadequate that we have to complete it with other procedures)
  2. Most acquisitions batch utilities don’t allow to retrieve the sub-libraries records and this is a problem for a Library System consisting of many sub-libraries having different policies and different budgets for the acquisition.

Are we allowed, with ALEPH 500, to use freely financial and administrative records? We hope the answer can be satisfactory.
