Aleph Configuration:

To manage the Library System we use:

 

  • a UNIX-Aleph (version 3.2.6.03) license for 120 users (31 full users, 89 search users) and 220.000 records.
  • a dedicate IBM RISC 6000/580 typ. 713 with 580 Mb of central memory, 6 Gb disk storage and 668 Mb of paging space.
  • a dedicate IBM RISC 6000/43P typ. 100 with 256 Mb of central memory, 2 Gb disk storage and 96 Mb of paging space (with Internet connection secured network gateway a "firewall" software, used to manage a controlled access to our WWW and Aleph server).
  • 60 Personal computer (20 reserved for OPAC) and 20 printer.
  • PC and printers are linked to the host using Token-Ring technologies with TPC/IP protocols.
  • Chamaleon for Windows95 as emulation s/w for telnet connection and remote print management
  • host is connect to Internet via "firewall machine"
  • host is connect to the University main frame via SNA in order to daily down load of borrower records from administrative database.

Major Developments since last ICAU-meeting:

Sep '96 - On line Current Contents project
Oct. '96 - Self service circulation (Beta test with Ex-Libris and 3M)
Retroconversion project. The "old electronic catalog" conversion goes on; this project concerns the correction of the old records data (already in the ALEPH data base) by external staff engaged for a definite time.
Nov. '96 - E-mail delivery of journal's photocopies project (from faculty's on line request)
Dec.’96 - Current subscriptions catalog on WWW
Mar.’97 - On-line ILL requests via WWW
Apr.’97 - Installation of Self-check in the Library’ reading room

Current Situation:

Subject areas covered: Economics and Banking, Law.

The Library basically purchases everything issued in Italy in the field of economics and similar sciences and a remarkable selection of foreign publications, particularly English and American with an increase of about 12,000 items and 24,000 issues per annum.

"BOC" our on-line catalog contains:

 

On 30/6/97, 17,545 registered users:

  • external collaborators of the University 610

  • external interlibrary loan users 140

Circulation statistics for June '97:

  • 16,240 loans (5,300 from open stacks and 1,000 using Self-check)
  • 16,663 returns
  • 12,646 on-line requests
  • 2,497 reservations
  • 32 photocopy requests

ILL statistics for June '97:

  • 147 book loans
  • 160 journal photocopies

Major Developments planned:

Use of WWW OPAC interface on 20 PC reserved for readers into the Library rooms using WWW front server facilities

CD-ROM network

Controlled access to the Library rooms through magnetic card and automatic assignment of "reading place" to the users with management of holds queue.

ILL document delivery using ARIEL software with partner libraries
