Development
Collaboration:
DTV and Ex Libris are continueing their
collaboration in the domain of the standard-based
client server applications for Aleph.
Developments include further enhancement of the
prototype WWW server running at DTV and
investigations regarding the port of the
modifications to the new Aleph 500 WWW server.
The Z39.50 server is also being updated to
reflect the evolution of the protocol (version 3)
and will soon support new extended services to be
profiled within the scope of the EU project
Universe where Ex Libris as well as DTV are
partners.
During the past year DTV
has also developed a number of applications with
interfaces to Aleph, such as DanWeb, a facility
for forwarding searches between the web OPACS of
various vendors; JOBRO, a table-of-contents
browser for journals interlinked with an article
database in Aleph; a WWW electronic journals
directory with automatic Aleph update, etc. Some
of these applications could be of interest to
other Aleph users and are consequently under
investigation for potential integration into the
Aleph package.
Aleph 500:
Aleph 500 version 9 has been installed for
testing purposes. DTV is starting to plan for the
transition from Aleph 300 series to Aleph 500.
The transition for the
Web version will probably occur in several phases
from January 1998 and until Summer 1998.
Reference database:
DTV has designed a unique database for reference
questions based on a specially developed format.
The database contains registration of reference
questions received, their answers and the search
strategy used. It is searchable for staff only.
Catalogueing electronic
journals:
DTV has developed a special application for
catalogueing electronic journals. The
catalogueing information is keyed into a special
interface as part of an internet guide ( Internet
Pointer Index . URL: http://www.dtv.dk/ipg/
and the
bibliographical information automatically
transferred to Aleph. This means that the journal
is only registered once, but visible and
accessable in 3 different tools - DTV's Web OPAC
and TELNET OPAC as well as through the Internet
Pointer Guide.
Thesaurus:
DTV has developed a special access to present
DTV's thesaurus data. The data is extracted from
Aleph, ported to the Web and presented through a
Web browser using frames. The data that is in
Danish can be shown in alphabetical order (an
alphabetical index) or according to the UDC
system used at DTV. http://www.dtv.dk/tools/tesaurus/tesaurus.htm
Barcode labels:
DTV has developed a special program to print
barcode labels together with the bibliographical
information necessary for shelving purposes. The
barcodes are produced in Aleph using information
from the Aleph modules.
Security system:
DTV is in the process of installing 3M's theft
detection system and self-checkout PC.
