Major developments since last ICAU meeting:
- Upgrading to ver 3.2_5.4 in December 1995 (since Sept 30 3.2_5.13). This time we had a much shorter testing period than on previous occasions and although we encountered some problems it went fairly smoothly. However, we are still discovering errors and problems that were caused by both the version and the recent patch upgrades. The WWW server has not been functioning very well since the upgrade, but we have not yet done much about it due to lack of time. We are continuously working on extending our library services on the World Wide Web, and one recent development
is a self-instructional introductory course to ALEPH.
- The routine for invoicing of photocopies that our distributor ICL has developed, has been improved during the past year, in order to handle also the branch libraries.
- Since October 1995 we are running an ERL server, thus giving our patrons access to all the major agricultural international databases in Windows environment (with the client software Win- or MacSPIRS).
Major developments planned:
- Improving the functionality of the ALEPH WWW server.
- Transferring to a new hardware platform (SUN UltraSPARC).
- Completion of the "LIBRIS-to-AGRIS" project. The project that was briefly described under Future developments in last years update report has unfortunately not yet been brought to a conclusion.
- Implementing the ILL module. This, however, is still pending awaiting action from the Swedish National Library.
- The branch libraries are still not using the Serials module to its full extent, but training is ongoing and we hope that they will be able to start using the checking-in functions by January 1st 1997.
- Implementing the server software WebSPIRS on our ERL server.
Open problems:
- WWW-server - see above.
- Performance problems, partly due to lack of disc space.
- As mentioned in our previous update reports, we would still very much like to see the thesaurus functions improved.
