Aleph configuration:
-
- Aleph version: 325.6
- Modules used: OPAC, CAT, MA, CIR, SER, ACQ, ULM, (WWW)
- Unix NX, version 7
- ICL Team Server H432i, 192 Mb SIMM, 5 Gb disc space
Major developments since last ICAU-meeting:
- New unix-server was installed june 1995.
- Communicatiions were changed to TCP/IP, though some of our libraries still use asychronous communication.
- We got a mutual gateway to the Internet and set up af homepage with useful adresses for the convenience of the libraries (later for our users). We have also set up Aleph in WWW for a few of our libraries. So far it is for test purposes.
- We held a seminar about automation of libraries and the future prospets and developing possibilities of government libraries. We decided to form a working party, which has the task of bringing new inspiration to the way, we manage our system and libraries.
- A working group of specialist users was builded in order that we may get more input to the daily use of Aleph.
Major developments planned:
- We are currently working upon a project of making more user-friendly interface in order that it can be easy to get access to the system and get the information wanted.
- We are planning a series of seminars and courses for the staff of the libraries in order to teach them more than the basics of the system.
- We are planning to introduce Aleph 500 during a period at 1-1,5 years.
- We are planning to get better integration between homepages of the institutions of our libraries and that of MiniBib thus providing the only reasonable access for end-users in the organizations of the libraries. However this requires some form of access control.
Open problems:
- We would like to decide, which parts of the WWW we want to open to the public, as some of our libraries are not open to the public. We are sorry to hear that this is not possible before Aleph 500.
- Serials seem to be an Aleph module filled with problems. We have had serious problems with routing lists (iutil 611). So far it seems that there has been little interest in solving them, although it costs considerable extra time for the staff.
- We need facilities to extract statistical information in order that we may get the relevant information about the use of the system.
Note:
The MiniBib consortium consists of 20 special libaries in parliament, independent institutions and public enterprises. The system is run by The Administrative Library.
