Aleph configuration:
-
- Aleph version: 3.2_5 (Since spring 1996)
- Modules used: all modules except the ILL
- Operating system: UNIX Sparc System V/386 release 3.2 version 7.4.4
- Server type: DRS6000 level 720 (ICL server) with 2 66 MHz processors, 512 MB RAM and 12 GB harddisk.
- Network configuration: ether-net at the main library with the 5 branch libraries connected via 64 Kb lines
- Workstations: At the main library we have 86 pc's connected via TCP/IP. 12 pc's are for public use. Each othe 5 branch libraries have between 4 and 7 pc's of which 2-3 are for public use.
- A total of 116 pc's in Gentofte Public Library
- Besides we have 11 stand-alone pc's (6 in the main library and 1 in each branch library) for public use of CD-ROM and 1 stand-alone pc in the main library for public use of word-processing.
The major improvement since last meeting
is the installation of new pc's all over, mooving to TCP/IP, connecting all pc's to Internet, splitting our network into a private and a public network and moving the Aleph-server to the public network - not to mention making our homepage (in danish not yet in english). All of this was done in september 1996. Our address on Internet is http://www.gentofte.bibnet.dk/ALEPH.
With the change from Aleph version 3.2_4 to 3.2_5 we had system improvements although we still experience drawbacks from changes wanted by others - changes that are obligatory instead of optional.
Our major problem
are changes in new versions of Aleph that makes our daily routines impossible to perform offering no alternative solutions. These changes are of course considered as bugs in relation to our contract but solving bugs of high priority takes far too long time. The result of this is lack of functionallity, poorer service to our customers and excessive use of staff - all three unacceptable when running a modern public library.
Presently we are installing a new database in Aleph containing references to articles and reviews in major serials and newspapers. This database will be accessible as a part of our Aleph database from november 1996.
The plans for next year are
- installing a dedicated WWW-server containing our homepage on the public network (scheduled late 1996/beginning 1997)
- using ILL (scheduled late 1996/beginning 1997)
- mooving on to Aleph version 3.2_6 (scheduled beginning 1997)
- together with the townhall building a public information system (scheduled 1997)
- considering using our CD-ROM's in network
