Background:
a short presentation of GUI services in library automation is available
at this address
Purpose:
The workshop is intended to prepare general and specific recommendations to
the Aleph development team on GUI and its functionality. The preparation of a
priority list is also a main concern of the discussion. These lines are
intended just to start up the discussion.
Software environment, priorities set-up:
- MS-Windows
- WWW
- X/T Motif
- Macintosh
- ...
Functionality available:
- equivalence in all environments
- just OPAC and end-user services on WWW
- formats, icons, standards, feedback
- ...
Z39.50:
- an ALEPH specific GUI client
- any Z39.50 GUI
- ...
Multimedia:
- which image services: formats, zoom, rotate, ...
- which sound services: formats, ...
- ...
Gateway interface:
a special service able to welcome the reader and let her/him choose the
desired library service: ALEPH, CD-ROM-LAN, Internet gateway, FTP, ...
Recommendations
- the old character-based user interface should always be available,
- in a GUI-OPAC a special option should be left open to use the old
character-based CCL interface,
- ....
