UNIMARC
Memorandum to Ex Libris concerning MARC format
structure
- Indicators
We hope that all the problems will be solved in the so called
'96,
as Ex Libris promised. In the meantime we will be satisfied if the
improvements, announced for 3.2_5 version, will work and if the export
procedure UTIL 40 will treat indicators in a correct way.
- Subfields
We expect
'96 will be more flexible in retrieving them and that all
utilities (e.g. UTIL 52 and some IUTILs) will work on the level
of subfields. In the meantime an improvement of fixed forms is
necessary.
- Fixed fields
We expect
'96 will let us enter the data for fixed fields
separately and to retrieve particular data from these fields. In
the meantime Ex Libris should take into consideration the creation of
a CSP command based on a special program that will copy the data from
fixed fields into some separate fields from which it would be possible
to send them to access files.
- Linking entry fields
We strongly recommend that Ex Libris take more care about searching
and display of these fields. On importing the Unimarc records the
data from these fields should be used for automatic linking to
records already existing in the database.
- ULM
The mechanism for creating ALG field should be accomodated for
Unimarc tags.
- Authority records
We request preparing a tool for handling Unimarc authority
records, probably similar to the Central Authority File for USMARC.
In the meantime the National Library of the Czech Republic will
start with filling a CLA base, defined for Unimarc / Authorities. The
records from this database can be used by Ex Libris for testing
this tool.
- Electronic conference
We consider as useful to exchange information and ideas
concerning MARC formats in
. These could be used as an additional
input for formulation of requirements on the future development of
. The National Library of the Czech Republic will create and
maintain such conference.
- Alpha-sites
We suggest that Ex Libris includes into alpha-sites one USMARC
site (IRIS) and one Unimarc site (NLCR) - these sites should
recieve special demonstration package for testing MARC
functionality and are willing to provide the necessary feedback
to Ex Libris.
