ILL WORKSHOP
ICAU Sept 19th 1995
Considering that libraries now focus on Access instead of
collecting, and the international development of electronic
information services leads to greater emphasis on the use of ILL
functions as an important library service.
Not many ALEPH library users have started using the ALEPH ILL, but
many are planning to in the near future according to the ICAU
reports.
With this in mind we suggest that ALEPH-ILL functions be improved
first of all for optimizing the efficiency of the present ILL
functions and secondly present suggestions for future trends.
Initially we expect an explanation and reasons for Ex Libris not
wanting to integrate the ILL functions in the total ALEPH
environment. All practical experience points at this as an
important problem.
OPTIMIZING EFFICIENCY NOW
- automatic e-mail ordering functionality
- downloading of all orders into ALEPH ILL from the local
national union catalog
- request facility for ordering references not found in the local
ALEPH databases
- display status of ILL orders/records in BD
- PUSH command should have user defined default values or a
Repeat function
- user defined printout options (letters, orders)
- letter to user like P-letter in CIR (note to user about
reference not being in library and that ILL procedures
have been started)
- length or supplier code ( 6 or 8 characters) (Check ILL
standard)
- supplier reply = to 120 characters (Check ICAU request)
- CATALOGER field included in ILL format for search/report
purposes
- report facilities and statistical report functions improved
FUTURE TRENDS
- EXTRACT ILL command function from other databases for
downloading into ILL/ALEPH
- Electronic IFLA ordering slip
- use international ILL standard as exchange format (ISO 8459)
- discuss ALEPH ILL at next ICAU meeting
