The mission Nijmegen University Library scientific research and study process by delivering access to traditional and digital information resources (including on The Internet as well) for all the members of the University and University Medical Center.

Core of this system is the OPAC, containing bibliographic data on the collection within the Nijmegen University.

• Description TCP/IP, Banyan VINES (end expected for this protocol at the University: April 2001 and for the University Medical Center: July 2002), and SMB (netbios over TCP/IP)

• The library is using the Pica Library System (LBS-3) which consists of OPAC, Circulation, Acquisitions. For staff functions a special client (WinIBW) is used. Cataloguing is done in the GGC (Dutch shared central cataloguing system) and updates for the OPAC are retrieved from the GGC by an online update mechanism.
  
  Pica is developing a new library system (LBS-4) with a modular architecture and with inter-module communication by means of XML-formatted messages. The user interface will be html-based: no special clients are needed.

• Standard desktop software are Microsoft Office products and for the in-house mounted databases ERL and WinBATCH as 'menu' for not-ERL-compliant databases, and other software products are: Endnote and Cardbox

• Bibliographic databases:

• 15 ERL-compliant databases
  Amongst them: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Current Contents search: 7 editions.
• Over 50 not ERL-compliant databases
  Amongst them many law databases, such as: IBFD databases, Kluwer databases and so on and also other applications, so as: Patrologia Latina Database, Thesaurus Linguae Graecae, Cochrane Library.

3. New projects

1. This year we will install 150 new thin client workstations for the library visitors, based on a Server Based Configuration. Software: Windows 2000 Advanced Server. All the in-house mounted databases, OPAC (LBS-4 version: OPC-4) and Internet will be consulted on this thin client station. On this moment we are in a research phase (maybe we need also Citrix software by reason of functionality for the not ERL-compliant databases).
2. Outsourcing ERL. We intend to outsource the 'in-house ERL (3 ERL servers)' to SilverPlatter Norwood. We start with a test phase for all our users in May 2001 and with good result we expect to stop our own ERL at October 2001. OUTSOURCING will be a hot item in the coming next year, I expect.
3. A study to end all the yet used DOS applications (such as Pica's Micro-OPC) and replace them by other windows based applications.
4. Implement the new library system LBS-4.
5. Replace cd-rom in-house databases with Internet versions (as far as available). As an example: Dissertation Abstracts to replace with the Internet version: Proquest Digital Dissertations.
6. To examine if we want to participate in the ARNO project(Availability of scientific output on university document servers).
