Mission Statement
The LNB is the main depository of Lithuanian
printed heritage. Its primary aim is to collect
and preserve all publications issued in
Lithuanian, as well as publications related to
Lithuania wherever printed.
Parallel to its direct responsibilities as a
national library, the LNB from 1991 functions as
a parliamentary
library.
The LNB provides services to all its users
with special emphasis to researchers and
scholars.
The LNB is the centre of the national
bibliography, as well as the core of the
research, preservation, automation and
co-ordination of Lithuanian libraries.

Library automation
The LIBIS project has foreseen the creation of
modern automated information systems (ABIS) in
all Lithuanian scientific and public libraries,
and their connection to the united information
system LIBIS to reach common library goals. The
With the help of ABIS, the automation of these
main technological and management library
processes is foreseen:
- Acquisition;
- Cataloguing;
- Control of serial issues;
- Readers registration, account and
service;
- Readers information service;
- Interlibrary loan service, calculation
and control;
- Publishing;
- Library statistics;
- Personnel account;
- Accounting (salaries, materials,
settlements etc.);
- Library linking to INTERNET, etc.

- LIBIS (Lithuanian
Integral Library Information System)

- Software used: LIBIS.
- New features: readers
service subsystem; statistical subsystem.
- Digital Library:
- National Library
Online Catalogue.
LNB card catalogue:
- This catalogue provides
information on books received in
the library up to 1998. It is the
first result of the card
catalogue retroconversion project
which is being carried out by the
National Library. The ultimate
aim of the project is the
creation of a computerized
catalogue representing the entire
library collection. In the image
catalogue, graphic images of
alphabetic card catalogue are
given in GIF format. Presently
the search for books in
Lithuanian is available.

digital documents:
Digitalization project "Creation of
Digital Archive of Written Documents on
History and Culture". Project
started in 1999 and will be finished in
2001. The aim of the project is to
digitize the unique documets from the
Library's manuscript collection.

contains 525.720 bibliographic
