Mission Statement
The National and University Library is one of the central cultural institutions in Croatia. It serves as a scientific and the major research library of the University of Zagreb, with a large collection of foreign literature. Its mission is to promote Croatian culture, research and science.
The tasks of the library concern collection development, preservation, conservation and presentation of the collections of the library. The collection development is partly based on the Legal Deposit Act, but also through the exchange, donations and purchase of other publications covering all areas of human creativity as well as famous special collections of manuscripts and rare books, graphics, maps and music.
2. Computer networks and Internet connectivity
Computers network (LAN) in NUL is a structured cabled UTP cat. 5. Transmission technology is Ethernet with speed of 10Mb/s. The dominant protocol on the network is TCP/IP with 8 servers, 12 asynchronous computers/terminals and most of 314 personal computers connected in LAN. NSK is connected to the Internet via CARNET.
CARNet network is the Croatian academic and scientific research community private WAN network. The network infrastructure is owned by the

100Mb/s connection to the CARNET.
3. Library automation
In the NUL there are in use:
- 7 servers: 1 on SCO UnixWare 2.1.3 (main server with CROLIST database Oracle
(UnixWare) 7.3.4 /Compaq Proliant 4500 rack version, 4 x Pentium 133MHz,
1GB RAM, 2MB Cache, 2 x 4.3GB Plugg. Fast-SCSI-2, Integr. 32 Bit
Fast-Widw SCSI-2, 2/8GB DAT, NetFlex-3/E, FDD Card, CD-ROM, External
Storage Rock-Mountable 43 GB
2 on Nowell NetWare (ISIP database and counting department)
4 on Microsoft NT4.0 (DNS server, MS Exchange server, MS IIS, CD-ROM
jukebox server)
- 314 personal computers
4. Union Catalogue
CROLIST integrated library system is used; developed and maintained by
UNIBIS, Zagreb and NUL.5. New in-house databases
