Elimination of the results of floods concerning the library collections: activities of The National Library of the Czech Republic
Last year´s floods caused the damages in tenth libraries and approximately 800 000 volumes were soaked. Part of them was frozen in the freezing plant in Kladno and thank to this the institutions prevent their total destruction. Shortly after the floods the National Library of the Czech Republic together with the National Archives open a research and tests of drying technologies and on the basis of their results built two drying workshops for rare and historical books and for modern literature. But the problems are not over by drying of soaked books. Many volumes will need be to store in preservation boxes, reformat, conserve etc. Also in this area the National Library evolves activities which would bring the solution for other institutions.
