About the State Technical Library

The State Technical Library (hereafter referred to as STL) is open to the public. Every citizen of the Czech Republic aged over 15 years of age and capable of performing legal acts can become a user or reader. Citizens who are under 18 years of age need the consent of their legal representative. Foreign citizens can use the services of the library upon the presentation of a valid passport or residency permit.

The library can be found in the Klementinum complex of buildings, and the entrance to the library is situated in the passage leading from Marianske Square. The entrance to the State Technical Library is on the left-hand side, here virtually all services are available to the public. On the right-hand side of the passage there are other specialized departments, which form the background of the library.

The easiest way to reach the library using City Public Transport is to take the underground, Line A, to Staromestska station, or to go to the tram stop of the same name by taking tram no. 17 or 18, or to take bus no. 207 and getting off at the terminus.

The library is open Monday - Friday from 8:00 - 19:00; during this time the General Study Room is also accessible to users. It has 111 study places.


The Abstracts' and Trade Literature Study Room is open as follows:
Monday:8:00 - 16:00
Tuesday:8:00 - 19:00
Wednesday:8:00 - 16:00
Thursday:8:00 - 19:00
Friday:8:00 - 14:30

In July and August, the library is open Monday-Friday from 8:00 - 16:00; on Tuesdays it is open until 19:00.


What documents and information will you find in the library?


The State Technical Library acquires, maintains and provides access to its collections of domestic and foreign literature and other information resources relating to the field of technology and applied natural and social sciences connected to technology.

The profile of the library's collections has been developing since 1718 when the foundations of the collections were laid; today, the library's collections focus on the following areas:

  • technical fields (mining of mineral raw materials, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, electrical technology and electronics, computer technology, information technology, automation, materials and their processing technology, power production industry, transport and roads, building industry, engineering building industry, architecture, urbanism, chemical and food-industry technology, consumer industry, ecology in relation to technical sciences);
  • applied natural sciences related to technology (mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, geophysics, geography, geology);
  • selected social sciences related to technology (economic sciences, economics, trade, linguistics, arts).

The collection consists of books (monographs, textbooks, manuals, encyclopedias, dictionaries), serial literature (journals, newspapers, volumes of collected scientific papers, yearbooks), special literature (materials from conferences, Czech Technical Standards, research reports, dissertations) and trade literature (catalogues of companies, products, fairs and exhibitions, directories, annual reports, price lists, leaflets, operating manuals, etc.)
