Talks & ShareSpace for PhD+
In collaboration with the Czech Association of Doctoral Researchers (ČAD), NTK Academic Services is launching a new series of events for early career researchers – Talk and ShareSpace for PhD+. The aim is to bring together doctoral candidates and postdocs from different disciplines and institutions in informal sessions to discuss the most topical issues in their studies, research, personal or career development.
The events will take place in the NTK venue and they are free for all, but you do need to register for the one you are interested in.
Do not hesitate to propose your own topic and/or prepare a presentation. Your ideas and contributions are very welcome!

Supervision
Come join the informal gathering for PhDs on Thursday, June 5 from 17:00 in the National Library of Technology (NTK). The meeting is organized by the NTK Academic Services together with the Czech Association of Doctoral Researches (ČAD).
While doing a PhD, few things are as impactful as the person of the supervisor, in both positive and negative terms. Come join another meeting in the Talks & ShareSpace for PhD+ series to talk about your experiences with supervisors and/or the conditions and rules for supervision as they exist at your institution.
This event is organized to offer a space to share your experiences, discuss the challenges and changes in doctoral education, and connect with peers from different institutions on the neutral ground of the National Library of Technology. Key principles are safety and confidentiality: everyone should feel secure in knowing they do not have to fear sharing and discussing their experience or asking about conditions at their home institution.
Doctoral students from any Czech university are welcome.
The meeting will take place in the Alexandria Academic Lounge attached to the Café Prostoru in the NTK foyer. You are welcome to come a bit earlier (from 16:00) to enjoy networking before the meeting itself starts at 17:00. Plus you can combine this with ordering something nice to drink or eat from the Café Prostoru connected to the meeting venue. The event will end around 20:00.
We won’t record this meeting or stream it online. However, the organizers may take photos and publish them on their websites and/or social media pages.

Last events
On Thursday, April 24, the first of the new Talks & ShareSpace for PhD+ meeting series took place at the National Technical Library (NTK), organized by the NTK Academic Services in cooperation with the Czech Association of Doctoral Researchers (ČAD). In addition to introducing these two organizations and what they offer to doctoral students, the main topic of the meeting was the ongoing implementation of the doctoral studies reform in the Czech Republic. In addition to presenting the main parameters of the reform and answering related questions, the meeting included a more open discussion of the participants’ own experiences within their PhD studies and the problems they have faced. Those shared experiences showed that despite some efforts to improve on the universities’ part, the quality of official communication in English remains problematic and supervision is sometimes conducted in inappropriate ways. One topic that resonated strongly – as a crucial element affecting both the quality of doctoral studies and the doctoral students’ satisfaction – was the relationship with the supervisor.
